Project 3

Here are a few of the images I've been considering for this project on high key and low key.

First a few high key images, and this one is my favourite. By making it high key, the main subject of the image is really highlighted. This is a fish trap in the middle of a river in the North of Thailand.

Again in this high key image the main object stands out. I also like the idea one can get from seeing the sun about to disappear behind the large cloud. Will it suddenly become dark?

The silhouettes in this image are enhanced by the high key approach, and the sun's rays are even more visible.

I didn't like this next image in colour. It just didn't work with the mixture of dark greens, bright yellow flower (center of the lotus) and bright white petals. By making it high key the contrast is far less but the brightness of the petals is maintained.

Now onto the low key images. This was taken not far from the center of Bangkok. When I was taking the photograph I was thinking how unpleasant it must be living on the klongs (open sewer or canals), and by introducing the low key I believe it provides that feeling all the more.

In this image I was simply trying to give the image a dull rainy day effect.

These guys are guards of the so called "red shirts" demonstrators. Tough looking guys, but the bright colours they were wearing didn't portrait that look as well as this low key black and white.

In the low key set of images, this is my favourite. The diagonal and vertical lines draw the viewer into the subject. I made it low key because I felt it was fitting for the scene. A destitute beggar hoping for some kindness from passersby.
