Critique

I've been studying a lot of Henri Cartier Bresson's work, and like very much the way he was able to capture something interesting out of the ordinary in his street scenes. Despite the fame of his photographs he managed to stay fairly anonymous and few people recognised him in the street. This allowed him to go about his work without anyone reacting to him.

In the image below I believe I have captured one of those 'decisive moments' that Bresson spoke about. While photographing street vendors a moment appeared where a one legged monk was walking past, a beggar was looking down onto the delicious food for sale and some tourists were buying some of the local food.

Whilst fumbling around to choose the right settings, I feel that I failed to compose the image to the best effect. The frame would be better moved slightly left to capture the whole of the monk and slightly down to capture the beggar's feet. Despite my failings I feel that I have captured this once ever decisive moment in an interesting way.

  1. Hi Chris. I was lucky enough to go on a walking tour of London with the street photographer Nick Turpin a few weeks ago. Did wonders for my actually being able to shoot on the street, not sure about the quality of my pics though...

Anyway, the point of the post - Nick runs a collective called in-public - it might be interesting for you to check out their website - www.in-public.com.

    Cheers

    Rob
