Dreaming Alien

Today I visited a photo exhibition by Frenchman Alain Soldeville. The aim of the exhibition is to show Bangkok as a metaphor for cultures in transition. Thailand is a place full of ancient traditions, but at the same time is being transformed into a modern commercialized metropolis. The artist states "My work is about the mutations resulting from this recent evolution. It also explores the spaces that have been left empty by the urban development."

The exhibition was held in a small private gallery called Kathmandu Gallery on Soi Pan just off Silom Road in downtown Bangkok. The gallery is rum by a local photographer and several images of the owner are also on display.

I enjoyed the exhibition and found that the photographer had shown Bangkok in an unusual fashion. As a set the images were clear in their intent, however as single pictures they would not hold much interest for me. It was a clear example of how a photographer can show a complex story with a set of images. From the last exhibition that I visited a few weeks ago that was actually based on a similar project the two were so far apart in how they went about the project. The Urban Lines exhibition was amazing in it's impact by using complex Photoshop techniques. Each and every photo could be displayed individually and would still be impressive. Whereas this exhibition was purely artistic and none of the images had been touched by Photoshop, although they had all been composed and exposed well.
